Funding to Develop Innovative Solutions to Reducing Litter – 26th September 2017 (England)

The Government has launched a new £450,000 Litter Innovation Fund to reduce litter by funding innovative solutions.

Funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) and managed by Wrap, grants of up to £10,000 are available to pilot, implement and evaluate small scale local research projects that could be replicated more widely. Standard litter picking activities are not in scope under this fund.

Funded projects will fall into one of three themes:

  • Education
  • Enforcement Strategies
  • Infrastructure.

This could include, for example, investigating incentives such as the use of rewards, working together to promote collaborative approaches or technology such as apps or product design. Of the £450,000 available in total £45,000 has been set aside for projects aimed specifically at reducing litter entering the marine environment.

It’s a two-stage application process – Stage One Expressions of Interest form for this round must be submitted by 26th September 2017 and the application round closes for Stage Two on 17th November 2017. Following this initial round, further funding rounds will be made available, dates to be announced.
