The Henry Smith Charity

The Henry Smith Charity is a large grant making charity.   They make grants totalling approximately £25 million each year to up to 1,000 organisations and charities for initiatives and projects that address social inequality and economic disadvantage.

The Henry Smith Charity makes grants for work throughout the UK. Applications can be made for revenue and capital activity. Priority is given to work with groups experiencing social and/or economic disadvantage, for example, people with disabilities; and work that tackles problems in areas of high deprivation, by which they mean those that fall within the bottom third of the National Indices of Deprivation.  Visit their Frequently Asked Questions page for more information about the Indices.

Purpose:

  • Hospitals and Medical Care
    Projects providing residential care or health care for those who are sick or in need, and projects which provide outreach services such as home care support. Services operated by the NHS will not normally be funded.
  • Hospices and Palliative Care
    Projects providing residential care or health care for those who are sick or in need, and projects which provide outreach services such as home care support.
  • Medical Research
    Specific medical research projects will be considered, although the Charity does not normally fund cancer research. Generally, only applications from recognised “Centres of Excellence” will be considered. Please refer to separate guidelines.
  • Disability
    Projects which are specifically aimed at the rehabilitation and training of the disabled can be considered.
  • Elderly
    Projects for the relief of the elderly, such as housing or support services. Projects which can be considered are residential care or health care for those who are sick or in need, emotional support such as befriending services and day care centres. Preference will be given to projects in needy areas.
  • Young People
    Projects that provide support to young people at risk, particularly those living in areas of considerable deprivation.
  • Drugs and Alcohol
    Projects aimed at the support and rehabilitation of people with drug and/or alcohol problems, as well as those to support people at risk of developing such problems, will be considered.
  • Community Service
    Projects that provide support for communities in areas of considerable deprivation including ethnic minority groups. This could include projects providing employment for the disadvantaged, shelter and necessities of life such as furniture for the homeless, or work with offenders.
  • Prisoners and Ex-offenders - Projects that help the rehabilitation and resettlement of prisoners and/or ex-offenders; including education and training that improve employability, and projects that support prisoners‟ families.
  • Family Services
    Projects which provide support to families at risk, including Home-Starts in deprived areas.
  • Homeless
    Projects providing practical support for the homeless and those at risk of homelessness.
  • Holidays for children
    Projects which provide holidays or outings for children from areas of considerable deprivation or children with a disability, aged 13 or under. For more information on this programme please call our Information Line on 020 7264 4970.  
    The Henry Smith Charity does not fund individuals. The only exceptions are the Poor Kindred of Henry Smith and individual members of the clergy of the Church of England, which are administered under separate schemes not covered by these guidelines.  For information about these schemes please call the Information Line on 020 7264 4970.

Grant Range: Small grants £500 to £10,000. Special list All of the grants on this list are made on a one-off basis and relate to a specific project for which applicants have requested support. This could include purchase/ refurbishment of a building, purchase of specialist equipment, other similar capital expenditure, or one year's running costs. Requests must be for £10,000 or more for one year only. General list This List covers annual grants made for more than one year, and up to three years. They are usually for a specific item in the applicant's budget such as a salary, or towards the costs of a particular project. Grants can be used for core costs. Requests must be for £10,000 or more, per annum. 

Who can Apply: Small grants of £10,000 or less are given to organisations registered with the Charity Commission for a minimum of two years and have an annual income under £150,000.
Grants can be for one-off capital items such as equipment purchase; these grants must be used within six months of being awarded. Grants can also be towards one year's running costs.
 
When to Apply:
Small grants applications can be submitted at any time during the year; they are processed fortnightly and are sent to the Trustees of the Small Grants Committee.  If there is sufficient support, the grant is approved and the applicant is informed by telephone. All applicants will be sent a letter notifying them of the Trustees' decision within four to six weeks of receipt of their application.

How to Apply: Applicants should complete a Small Grant application form and should also include a detailed budget for the project and the most recent annual report/audited accounts.
